where to stay in Rome.

Where to stay in Rome is probably one of my most asked questions! Here is why I put together this blogpost which contains all the information to make your travels to Rome, easy.

Let’s start from the beginning:

Choosing the right neighborhood can make all the difference in your experience.

Luckily, Rome has something for everyone, from historic stays to vibrant nightlife, local neighbourhoods and top tier hotels. Plus, I have handpicked top hotels in each area to help you find the perfect accommodation!

These are my top 3 best areas to stay in Rome and why:

  1. Trastevere, a local gem (& my favourite!)

For a more authentic Roman experience, Trastevere is the place to be. This charming neighborhood is known for its picturesque cobblestone streets, vibrant nightlife, and family-run trattorias serving the best pasta in town. It’s ideal for travelers who want to soak in the local culture while still being close to the city’s main attractions.

PROS: all the best local restaurants, bars and shops will be at a short walk.

CONS: given the abundant nightlife, if you are straight in the middle of the action, it might get loud at night.

Distance to city centre: at a 20 minutes walk OR 8 minutes tram ride to the city.

Top Hotels in Trastevere:

  • Hotel Santa Maria – A cozy boutique hotel set in a converted 16th-century convent, offering a peaceful courtyard oasis in the heart of Trastevere.

  • Villa Agrippina Gran Meliá – A luxury retreat with stunning views of the Vatican, lush gardens, and a spa for ultimate relaxation.

2. Centro Storico, to be in the heart of the action

If it’s your first time in Rome, staying in Centro Storico (the Historic Center) puts you right in the heart of the action. You’ll be within walking distance of famous landmarks like the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain. This area is perfect for those who want to wake up surrounded by history and enjoy charming streets filled with cafes, gelato shops, and lively piazzas.

PROS: right in the heart of the action, you will be super close to all the main monuments.

CONS: it is 24/7 always busy, it might get loud and everything from breakfast to dinner will be way more expensive (but it won’t reflect on the quality of the meals).

Distance to city centre: right in the city centre!

Top Hotels in Centro Storico:

  • Palazzo Navona Hotel – A stylish, boutique hotel just steps away from Piazza Navona, featuring a rooftop terrace with breathtaking city views.

  • Hotel Quirinale – A historic hotel near the Trevi Fountain with classic Roman elegance and a private garden retreat.

3. Monti, for the trendy & artsy vibes

Monti is Rome’s coolest neighborhood, full of vintage shops, trendy cafes, and a youthful atmosphere. Located near the Colosseum, this area is great for travelers who enjoy boutique shopping, unique restaurants, and a hip ambiance.

PROS: Stylish and vibrant area with a great mix of locals and tourists.

CONS: Accommodation options can be more expensive compared to other areas.

Distance to city centre: only a 10ish minutes walk!

Top Hotels in Monti:

  • Casa Monti – A chic boutique hotel with stylish decor, a rooftop bar, and easy access to Monti’s best attractions.

  • Hotel Giolli Nazionale – A comfortable, modern hotel on Via Nazionale, perfect for exploring both Monti and the nearby historical sites.
